The Main Types and Treatments for Lymphoma

There are more than 70 different types of Lymphoma and these types range in varying levels of their effect on the body. Some od the types are indolent, i.e., have slow growth, whereas others are highly aggressive. Herein, we will talk about the different types of lymphoma and how they have an effect on the body.

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL)
This is the most common type of Lymphoma. It mainly occurs in older adults. There are several types of treatment methods used to fight Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. These include radiation therapy, immunotherapy, stem cell transplantation, targeted therapy, and chemotherapy.

Hodgkin Lymphoma
This is also referred to as the Hodgkin’s disease. The chances of curing Hodgkin’s disease are very high especially if it is detected at an early stage. It begins in type-B cells that are present in the bone marrow. Several kinds of treatments are used to cure Hodgkin lymphoma, including immunotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and chemotherapy.

Mantle Cell Lymphoma
It is an aggressive form of NHL. It is very rare so much so that only around six percent of cases come under this type. It could be very dangerous as Mantel cell lymphoma is commonly not diagnosed at an early stage and is diagnosed at a later stage. It involves or occurs in the bone marrow or gastrointestinal tract.

Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma

Small lymphocytic lymphoma is also abbreviated as SLL and is a slow-growing lymphoma. It is quite identical to CLL or chronic lymphocytic leukemia but in the case of CLL, the cancer cells are mostly found in bone marrow and blood whereas, in the case of small lymphocytic lymphoma, the cancer cells are found in the lymph nodes.

Lymphoblastic Lymphoma
This type of lymphoma can develop from both T and B cells. It occurs mostly in younger aged people. Again, it is a very rare form of high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It is quite similar to acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which is why treatment methods are the same for both.

Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia
This is also known as lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma. This is one of the rarest forms of lymphomas and accounts for merely one to two percent of lymphoma cases. In the case of this kind of lymphoma, antibodies are produced abnormally. It affects mostly older adults and often characterized by anemia.

Nodular Sclerosis Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
This is one of the most common types of lymphoma. It occurs in almost seventy percent of the Hodgkin’s cases and is mostly found in younger adults. It is highly curable and treatable and even the rates of its treatment are very high. Nodular Sclerosis Hodgkin’s Lymphoma occurs in lymph nodes that contain sclerosis or scar tissue.

The survival chances of both Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma depend on the spread of cancer cells and the type of cancer. As per the American Cancer Society, the overall survival rate of patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is 70 percent. In the case of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the survival rate can be as high as 90 percent if it is detected in stage 1.
