How To Choose The Right TV
Getting a new TV is a big deal. They are expensive, there are a lot of choices, there is a lot of technical information that needs answers before getting one, and there are a lot of different features that someone may or may not need in their TV. Do I need 4K? How about OLED vs. LED? When is it okay to take the cheaper option? Here is a short guide to getting the correct TV:
1. Choose a price range
New TVs can be astronomical. Getting the right price range is important to having the right cost for a new TV. Knowing the price going in is an important tip for shopping for a TV. Low end prices are around $120, and it can go way up. A pocket destroying TV is a 98 inch, 8K TV priced at $50,000! Know that 4K TVs enter at around $170 and go up for quality. It does not have to be measured in the thousands, but the quality can be improved a lot by getting the right feature set.
2. Measure for TV size
One of the most important parts about getting a new TV is getting the right size. Know how big of a TV will fit in the place it will go. There is no sense in getting a giant TV if the entertainment center is small. TVs range from 19 inches to as big as 100 inches. This is also a lot of a TVs prices. Knowing the right TV size is key to getting the right TV.
3. OLED vs. LED
Contrast is important to making images pop. Images look much more realistic when they feel like they are jumping off the screen. OLED allows for infinite contrast because it can turn off individual pixels to produce actual darkness on the TV screen. LED will not do this and will instead show a dark pixel that is still lit up. OLED by itself will cause a small amount of graphical wow from the TV.
4. Choose the TV resolution
Resolution is a key metric that determines TV graphical performance. 4K TVs look and feel much better than standard 1080p TVs when content is displayed in 4K. Not everything is yet shown in 4K, but there is a major bump in graphic prowess, slightly less than the jump from standard definition to high definition televisions. 4K is the future of TV and one of the right features to get on a new television.
5. Stream with a Smart TV
Smart TVs are important because of streaming. They act like a computer application or a phone app on the TV, allowing access to Hulu and Netflix and all the streaming applications. With the jump in people cord cutting, streaming is very important, and a smart TV eliminates the need for a secondary box for using streaming applications at home.
6. Upgrade the audio
A big, underappreciated part of watching TV is the sound. Upgrading a television with improved sound can go a long way to increasing immersion when using the television. A sound bar is a good way to do this, and prices of those run from the low hundreds to a few thousand dollars. This is something that is noticed mostly when new sound is added but will improve the experience a lot.
