Leukemia – Types and Symptoms
The type of cancer that affects the blood cells is referred to as leukemia. Blood cells are categorized as red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells. As far as leukemia is concerned, it affects the white blood cells. Mainly, the condition is categorized under four types, and here’s everything you need to know about them and the symptoms of different types of leukemia.
Types of Leukemia
Leukemia can be categorized on the basis of the cell type. When the condition involves myeloid cells, it is referred to as myelogenous leukemia. These cells are young blood cells that go onto becoming monocytes or granulocytes. When leukemia involves the lymphocytes, it is known as lymphocytic leukemia.
Here, we discuss the four main types of the condition and the symptoms of different types of leukemia.
- Acute Myeloid Leukemia
This is the type of leukemia that affects the blood and often starts from the bone marrow, i.e., the inside parts of the bones. Usually, this type of cancer begins with the cells that go onto turning into white blood cells. However, it can also affect other cells that form the blood. When a person is in the early stages of acute myeloid leukemia, their body is not making enough healthy blood cells. This might make the person feel that they get infected by the flu or any other infections more frequently than normal. The potential symptoms are- Fatigue
- Fever
- Loss in body weight
- Sweating at night
- Appetite loss
- Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia
This type of leukemia is a cancer that affects the bone marrow and the blood. The condition is extremely aggressive and multiplies immature blood cells rapidly and is referred to as acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It is the most common type of cancer that affects children. With good treatment, the chances of curing the disease can increase. It can also affect adults, but the chances of cure in such cases are slim. The symptoms of acute lymphocytic leukemia include- Pain in the bones
- Bleeding gums
- Catching infections frequently
- Fever
- Nosebleeds that are either severe or frequent
- Paleness of the skin
- Swelling of lymph nodes which causes lumps to form near the underarms, groin, neck, or abdomen
- Breathlessness
- Fatigue
- Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
This type of leukemia also starts from the bone marrow and the blood, but it progresses slowly as compared to other types of leukemia. It is more common in older adults and with treatment, it can be controlled. In many cases, no early symptoms can be detected. But when the symptoms start showing, they can include- Enlarged lymph nodes that are not painful
- Fever
- Abdominal pain
- Fatigue
- Night-time sweating
- Loss in body weight
- Frequently catching infections
- Chronic Myeloid Leukemia
This is a less-common type of leukemia that begins with the bone marrow. Although it can affect people at any age, it is more commonly found in older adults and rarely in children. The symptoms of this type of leukemia include- Pain in the bones
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Loss in body weight
- Sweating at night
- Loss in body weight
